Soliton squeezing in optical fibers

چکیده

The use of squeezed light can overcome the standard quantum limit in phase sensitive optical measurements. This thesis is a theoretical and experimental investigation of soliton squeezing at 1.55gm. Theoretically, the effects of the continuum on squeezing have been investigated. Experimentally, modelocked fiber laser sources at 1.55gm have been developed for both schemes and their noise properties have been investigated. The timing jitter of these lasers are found to be quantum limited. Squeezing has been observed with two schemes, both using the optical fiber as the nonlinear medium. As much as 4.4dB of noise reduction has been detected. Thesis Supervisor: Hermann A. Haus Title: Institute Professor

Quantum Theory of Optical Solitons

A quantum theory of optical solitons is developed. Two kinds of optical soliton phenomena are studied : solitons in optical fibers and self-induced transparency (SIT) solitons. Quantum effects of optical soliton propagation are investigated. Among various quantum effects examined, two of them are of particular interest : the position spreading effect and the squeezing effect. The former places ...

Generation and manipulation of squeezed states of light in optical networks for quantum communication and computation

We analyze a fiber-optic component which could find multiple uses in novel information-processing systems utilizing squeezed states of light. Our approach is based on the phenomenon of photon-number squeezing of soliton noise after the soliton has propagated through a nonlinear optical fiber. Applications of this component in optical networks for quantum computation and quantum cryptography are...

Time Domain Correlations and Gated Detection of Quantum Solitons

We study the time-domain quantum-noise properties of solitons in optical fibers. Perturbation theory, including quantum description of the continuum, is used to derive a complete analytical expression for the second-order correlator of the amplitude quadrature in time domain. This correlator is subsequently used to calculate the photon-number noise reduction below the standard quantum limit by ...

Theory of quantum fluctuations of optical dissipative structures and its application to the squeezing properties of bright cavity solitons

We present a method for the study of quantum fluctuations of dissipative structures forming in nonlinear optical cavities, which we illustrate in the case of a degenerate, type I optical parametric oscillator. The method consists in (i) taking into account explicitly, through a collective variable description, the drift of the dissipative structure caused by the quantum noise, and (ii) expandin...

Quantum theory of fibre Bragg grating solitons*

Following the pioneering work of Professor Haus, a general quantum theory for bi-directional nonlinear optical pulse propagation problems is developed and applied to study the quantum properties of fibre Bragg grating solitons. Fibre Bragg grating solitons are found to be automatically amplitude squeezed after passing through the grating and the squeezing ratio saturates after a certain grating...
